Propagation of transients in a distribution network

Transients due to faults at a distribution network served by a distribution substation propagate to every part of the network. A study using mathematical models and actual measurements shows that different parts of the network have different responses. High-speed, high-resolution digital electronic monitoring devices for use in distribution network alarm systems can generate false alarms if used improperly, due to lack of information about system responses. The results of actual field measurements based on staged and controlled simulated faults provide insight of the ranges of expected magnitudes of transient responses in a typical distribution network and provide a better understanding of the electric behavior of a distribution network under fault conditions.<
