On the simulation of MMW-radar cross-range imaging

Cross-range imaging can be performed using a frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) radar by illuminating a slowly rotating target. The process has been simulated mathematically by calculating the target response using the geometrical theory of diffraction and by processing the radar signal using the fast Fourier transform. The operation of a 94-GHz FMCW radar was simulated. The images obtained are projections of the targets on their plane of rotation. The resolution of these images for the dimension along the radar beam is only a function of the bandwidth, while the cross-range resolution depends upon the operating frequency and the total angle of rotation. The cross-range images of a circular cylinder about 0.5 m in length and 0.1 m in diameter are shown.<
