Voltage regulator module with multi-interleaving technique for future microprocessors

In this paper, a new converter architecture that is based upon the buck topology and that allows a multi-interleaving technique is proposed. The converter provides automatic current sharing and improves current ripple cancellation effect. Multiphase buck converters with multi-interleaving technique perform better than with interleaving technique because the multi-interleaving technique can create a new duty cycle, can improve the transient response without increasing current ripple in each cell, and can raise the switching frequency with low switching, gate drive and body diode losses. Moreover, a bypass LC filter is presented to achieve nonpulsating input and output currents. As a result, based on losses analysis and simulation results, high efficiency, high power density, fast transient response and low-cost 12 V input VRM with output voltage 0.5 to 1 V and output current 100 to 300 A to power future microprocessors can be realized.
