Analytical comparison of conduction and switching losses of a novel matrix-z-source converter and a conventional VSI converter for automotive ISA 42 V system

This paper presents the analytical calculation of conduction and switching losses for a novel matrix-z-source converter and a conventional VSI converter respectively for automotive ISA 42 V system, and investigates the relevant comparison. The loss models are constructed taking into account of PWM modulation strategy while the calculation of semiconductor losses are based on experimentally verified parameters of switch devices. The conduction and switching losses in both starting (DC-AC inversion) and generating (AC-DC rectification) operation modes are investigated, and in either case, the comparison are graphically presented with respect to the modulation indices or the pairs of modulation index and AC current displacement angle. The comparison shows that in the starting operation mode the matrix-z-source converter can offer less total conduction and switching loss than VSI converter in certain range of modulation indices, although the range is somehow smaller than the ordinary z-source inverter because of the power semiconductors in series connection. While in the generating operation mode, the novel matrix-z-source converter can promise less total conduction and switching loss than the conventional VSI converter in almost the full range of modulation indices.
