Novell LAN for the Hungarian Institute of Cardiology

The design, development, installation, and maintenance of a computerized information system using DOS-based PC workstations and a multiserver local area network that is interconnected to worldwide area networks is discussed. The author summarizes the network topology, the database philosophy, and some interesting subsystems like optical patient cards, bedside terminals, picture archiving and communicative systems (PACS), etc. The system was implemented as the first automated information system in a 250 bed university hospital that specialized only in cardiac patients and open heart surgery.<
