Integrated modular avionics for next-generation commercial airplanes

The authors describe the goals and objectives of integrated modular avionics (IMA) and present one candidate architecture for IMA as applied to the Boeing 777 airplane. It is pointed out that the integration concepts being developed for the 777 Boeing represent an important first step in real world application of the IMA technologies being developed in the ARINC subcommittees. It is concluded that it is the realization of these concepts that will allow the necessary step improvement in system quality, reliability, safety, and maintainability demanded for all next-generation avionic equipment.<
