A study on surface subdivision

Subdivision surface are currently one of the most powerful surface representations used to model smooth shapes. Subdivision has become a staple of the geometric modeling community allowing coarse, polygonal shapes to represent highly refined, smooth shapes with guaranteed continuity properties. Unlike regular surface splines, such as NURBS, subdivision surface can handle shapes of arbitrary topology in a unified framework which is important in designing aesthetically pleasing shapes. In this paper we have studied in detail on the quad/triangle subdivision scheme. The subdivision rules are obtained by decomposing the subdivision process into separate steps: linear subdivision followed by vertex-averaging followed by a vertex correction. In general for quad/triangle meshes the scheme produces nicer surface.
