Development and current status of CACS (comprehensive automobile traffic control system)

The Comprehensive Automobile Traffic Control System (CACS) is essentially a communication system that links vehicles in motion, roadside equipment and a central data processing core. Through in-vehicle receivers and transmitters, through roadside units that pass information to and collect information from each vehicle and through a central computer control that digests and coordinates the information collected at the roadside units, the traffic flow on principal arteries and at major intersections is constantly monitored, individual drivers are instructed at each intersection which is the optimum route to take to their specific destinations, and emergency and driving advisories are dispatched directly to each vehicle whenever necessary. The CAC System was successfully tested in a pilot program lasting one year in central Tokyo. This report outlines the results of the CACS Project, including activities that have occurred since the project's completion.
