The influence of information technology on recent U.S. presidential elections

Elections are not only political processes but also computational endeavors. For eligible voters to exercise their right to vote and for their votes to count and be counted, accurate and reliable data processing capabilities must be in place. So it is not surprising that in the last two U.S. presidential elections, Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) have played a key role in determining and announcing the outcome. An analysis of ICT in the last two presidential elections and the years in between, offers an invaluable opportunity to assess how technology penetrates the fabric of society and how it transforms its processes.
