High speed target recognition using a three plane optical correlator

A magnetooptic device (SIGHT-MOD) capable of producing thousands of frames per second at 128*128 binary pixels per frame is discussed. This new modulator capability allows the consideration of extremely high filter frame rates necessary to construct a binary-phase-only filter (BPOF) for various target objects at a variety of aspect angles. The authors present an overview of research in progress concerning an effort to develop a Vander Lugt optical correlator, the computer system to generate BPOF filter, and an image processing system to enhance, detect, and recognize predetermined target signatures.<
