Direct Work Control for a Three-stack Switched Reluctance Motor

A dual control-and-geometry approach is proposed to achieve high grade torque quality of the switched reluctance motor (SRM). The control part consists of a simple direct work control technique which is based on the transformation of the magnetization curves of the motor into a set of work curves. This allows the torque, which is linearly related to the work expended within the motor, to be directly controlled to achieve high dynamic response. The geometry part refers to a unique yet simple 3-stacked structure that provides an inherent torque overlapping feature with no zero torque zones commonly found in SRM's. Comparisons are made with a normal 6/4 state/rotor pole SRM to demonstrate the advantages of the 3-stacked structure. Validated simulation results are presented to show the superior torque quality of the SRM drive system. Due to its simplicity, the proposed scheme can readily be implemented by low-cost processors
