Wind tunnel validation experiments to investigate the flow over a rotating and heated disk passed by a planar air stream

Wind tunnel experiments in a low speed wind tunnel have been performed by means of Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and IR Imaging in order to provide validation data for numerical calculations of the flow over a rotating and heated disc. The free stream conditions in the test section of the 1.3X1.3m
²
wind tunnel have been determined. A test rig has been designed where the rotating disc is heated up to 300°C by a heating film. The disc is embedded in a flat plate to ensure well defined flow conditions. IR imaging technique has been applied to determine the state of the flat plate boundary layer upstream of the rotating disc. The structure of the flow field parallel to the rotating disc as well as the boundary layer are determined by means of standard (2D/2C) and stereoscopic (2D/3C) PIV measurements. The temperature distribution over the rotating disc has been measured with an IR imaging system.
