Design of single mode SMF, NZ-DSF and DCF optical fibers

This paper presents the work done for the purpose of designing single mode fiber (SMF), non-zero dispersion shifted fiber (NZ-DSF) and dispersion compensating fiber (DCF). The motivation is to utilize the local minimum at 1550 nm for attenuation loss. A GUI Based MATLAB program has been used to determine different parameters for a specific fiber and to present the result graphically. Users can fine tune the dispersion from the feature of this program and simultaneously observe its performance against Corning SMF 28. A step-index single mode fiber (SMF) with total dispersion of +17 ps/nm/km at 1550 nm has been designed with pure silica core and 13.3% B/sub 2/O/sub 3/:86.7% SiO/sub 2/ cladding. A step-index non-zero dispersion shifted fiber (NZ-DSF) with a total dispersion of +3 ps/nm/km at 1550 nm has been designed with a 3.1% Ge core and 13.3% B/sub 2/O/sub 3/:86.7% SiO/sub 2/ cladding. A step-index dispersion compensating fiber (DCF) with a total dispersion of -115 ps/nm/km has been designed with a 16.2% Na/sub 2/O: 32.5% B/sub 2/O/sub 3/:50.6% SiO/sub 2/ core and 9.1% P/sub 2/O/sub 5/:90.0% SiO/sub 2/ cladding.
