Rigorous modal theory for perfectly conducting lamellar gratings

Planar-integrated digital optical systems require reflection-type array generators. A modal algorithm is developed for perfectly conducting Dammann gratings. The method is first applied to the analysis of the scalar-theoretic designs in local resonance domain. Reflective resonance domain Dammann gratings with 100% diffraction efficiency are then designed, and their sensitivity to errors in fabrication and reconstruction is analysed. A five-beam resonance-domain grating is demonstrated experimentally at lambda =10.6 mu m.<
