A study of compact ultra-wideband microstrip antennas operating over the K, Ka and millimeter wave bands using Sierpinski gasket patches

This work proposes several compact ultra-wideband microstrip antennas that operate in the K, Ka, and millimeter wave frequency band. A Sierpinski gasket triangular patch is used to obtain such a bandwidth. A full wave finite difference time domain simulator Fidelity/spl trade/ is used to simulate the proposed antennas. Simulations show the effect of various parameters on the antenna bandwidth and gain (these include substrate thickness, feed location, and stage of Sierpinski patch). Moreover, it is shown through simulations, that the proposed antennas can be perceived as arrays of small triangular patches which can explain the wideband and relatively high gain of these antennas as well as the range of operation.
