Rechargeable Li/LiCoO/sub 2/ button cell

Electrolyte improvements made in laboratory half cells have enabled the practical development of the rechargeable Li/LiCoO/sub 2/ system into sealed 70 mAh button cells. High-rate capabilities of greater than 6 mA/cm/sup 2/ have been demonstrated in button cells cycled between 4.3 and 3.0 V at 25 degrees C. Energy densities for a discharge rate of 2.7 mA/cm/sup 2/ at 25 degrees C, -10 degrees C, and -40 degrees C were 102, 89, and 81 Wh/kg, respectively. Higher-rate charging up to 1.25 mA/cm/sup 2/ has been demonstrated. In addition, the effect of storage on the open circuit voltage of charged cells has been investigated.<>
