Analogy to numerical solution of wave propagation in an inhomogeneous medium with gain or loss variations

An analogy to numerical method is presented for solving the problem of wave propagation in inhomogeneous media. This method may be used to calculate the modes in an inhomogeneous slab waveguide without using the Wentzel-Kramer-Brillouin (WKB) method or perturbation method.
