Designing for enhanced interpretation, anticipation and reflection in the intensive care unit

Previous participative studies concerning the intensive care nursing process revealed contextual factors influencing the behavior of the nurse (contextual cues), which were included in a model categorizing them being primarily related to the current, future, and past situation. This model is being used as an information framework for designing a new supportive system for the intensive care nursing process. In this paper, the results of three iterative design activities are described: a specification of the setting in which the envisioned product will function, a definition of the products' main functionalities, and a vision regarding the communication of the needed information through an interface. Eventually, these product specifications are implemented as a working prototype
