OVO in a dynamically expanding 3G environment: challenges and solutions of a large scale deployment

The emerging third generation wireless (3G) telecommunications environment poses many challenges for HP openview operations (OVO) monitoring solution deployment. The 3G environment is characterised by a large number of diverse platforms and applications, which are in turn constantly evolving. This leads to a variety of challenges throughout the OVO deployment lifecycle. These challenges include: (1) the determination of all of the servers and applications that require monitoring, (2) deployment across multiple networks, (3) providing a redundant architecture, (4) provision of a backup solution, and (5) acceptance testing of the monitoring solution and alarm analysis. This paper is a case study of a successful large scale deployment of OVO into an emerging 3G environment. This deployment covered over 500 servers and 10 Smart plug-in types, including 76 custom logfile monitors. Solutions to the challenges experienced in the deployment are detailed in this paper. During the production implementation, it was found that major benefits were achieved by providing an alarm analysis and alarm reduction. Ongoing work in this area reduced the alarm load on the operational personnel from a peak of more than 10,000 alarms a day, to around 100 per day.
