CNGI Project and CERNET2

China's Next Generation Internet Project (CNGI) was initiated from 2002 and approved in 2003. The CNGI, jointly supported by multiple Chinese government departments, will focus on the development and deployment of next generation internet and IPv6. CERNET and all of NSPs in China will join CNGI project. CERNET is only academic network joining CNGI project, and will establish the largest backbone of CNGI, which is called CERNET2, and operate CNGI Beijing exchange point. China's first national Intemet backbone, the China Education and Research Network (CEFWET) is fast becoming the world's largest nationwide academic network. Its current backbone reaches at 2.5G or 155M connecting 36 GigaPOP's, extending to more than 200 cities and more than 1300 universities and research institutes in China, and end user population of CERNET is more than 15 million. CERNET initiated the IPv6 research activities in China. In 1998, CERNET joined into 6bone, and in 2000, NSFCNET project was carried out and established the first IPv6 network in China. In 2002, Chinese government and Japanese government started the IPv6-CJ project for the collaboration of supporting a nationwide IPv6 testbed and developing IPv6 network technologies and applications. CERNET2 will be a native IPv6 Gigabit nationwide backbone connecting 20 GigaPOP’s at 10G and 2.5G over CERNET DWDM network. More than 200 universities and research institutes in China will connect to CERNET2 at 1G-1OG DWDM link in 2004. CERNET2 will connect to another IPv6 academic networks in the world with high speed, such as Internet2 backbone, GEANT and APAN backbone. Using IPv6 technology, CERNET2 will move forward together with global Internet to be large scalable, much fast in the end to end performance, more secure, more real timely and more convenient to be accessed.
