A five-phase reluctance motor with high specific torque

An alternative topology for a synchronous reluctance motor (SRM) utilizing a novel five-phase, concentrated winding, wye-connected stator is proposed. The corresponding inverter requires only ten power transistors, each of which operate at a better switch utilization factor than a conventional three-phase, six-transistor bridge. It is shown that this machine is capable of producing about 10% more torque per RMS current flowing through the winding than the normal three-phase SRM.<
