History: André Blondel (1863–1938) French Scientist and Engineer

André Blondel was born in Chaumont on 26 August 1863. Graduating first in his class at the École des Ponts et Chaussées (School of Bridges and Roadways) in 1888, he was employed as an engineer by the Lighthouses and Beacons Service. Engaged as assistant to the director of the central Lighthouses and Beacons Service, he retired in 1927 as general first class inspector. He was appointed commander of the “Legion d'honneur” (the highest French distinction) in 1927 and life member of the French Academy of Science in 1913. He was honorary president of the French Electricians Society, in which he had been interested since 1890 and had enjoyed the privilege of his scientific communications.
