An examination of signaling traffic in a super-charged mobile network

Mobility management is the highest contributor of signaling traffic in mobile networks. Messages generated by the insert subscriber data procedure during a location update are not only large but more will be required in future third generation (3G) networks to allow for the transfer of large subscriber profiles. This paper compares the mobility management protocol used in GSM and 3G networks with that proposed for super-charged networks by examining the network's performance under normal conditions and during signaling transfer point congestion.
