Spatial diversity vs. array gain in cellular communication systems

Multiple antennas are used in cellular communication systems to create spatial diversity and array gain. Techniques such as transmit diversity do for the former, while beamforming systems do the latter. This paper investigates the tradeoff between spatial diversity and array gain as a function of the total diversity available in the system, both spatial and temporal.
