THIS PAPER WILL EXAMINE the relationship of the telephone industry and the mass merchandise semiconductor industry. The semiconductor itself was spawned in the telephone industry, but it has not flourished there as it has in other high technology areas. Equally, it has not had the impact on system architecture that has characterized its application elsewhere. To a significant extent this immutability has been the result of the system nature of the telephone business supported by the economics of a high capital service business. These constraints have been little understood in another solitude, the semiconductor game, and have been a source of great frustration to many of the players
