High temperature superconductors for radar applications

A brief description of off-axis sputtering deposition techniques is given, followed by a short survey of other high-temperature superconductor (HTS) deposition techniques. Data on film properties are presented. Key microwave properties-the surface resistance (including the frequency dependence of the surface resistance), the critical current, and the superconducting penetration depth-are discussed and related to component performance. The effects of temperature are described in the context of the basic physics and their impact on applications. Predictions of the performance of superconducting components are used to estimate the impact of HTSs on radar systems. It is argued that the impact of HTS technology will be twofold: new components with improved performance and new system applications.<
