Abstract:

In the frame of the EU95 project (European High Definition), a number of transition scenarios have been proposed to move from present TV systems (625 interlace) to HDTV (e.g. 1250 progressive). These are more or less complex depending on the milestones which are included. An evolutionary compatible scenario with clearly identified milestones preserving investment from obsolescence, providing a fast return on investment, realising a gradual increase of picture quality and taking the wider benefit of available technology for professional equipment as well as foreseeable consumer's display quality is described.<>
