Static compression inhibits matrix protein gene expression and increases collagenase gene expression in the meniscus

The biological response of the meniscus to static compression was quantified as changes in gene expression levels for relevant extracellular matrix proteins. Decreased mRNA levels for decorin and type I collagen were observed, as well as increased mRNA levels for the matrix metalloproteinase MMP-1. These findings demonstrate that the response of the meniscus to mechanical stimuli may be regulated in part at the transcriptional level.
