Development and Performance Evaluation of Garlic Peeling Machine

The Liliaceae family includes the annual bulbous crop garlic, which is used extensively as a spice and in medicine. However, conventional techniques of peeling garlic are costly, time-consuming, and labor-intensive. To overcome these constraints, the purpose of this study is to construct and assess the functionality of a small-capacity garlic peeling machine. In order to build an effective peeling technique, the research entailed measuring and determining important engineering features of garlic. The peeling machine’s design minimized harm to the cloves while efficiently removing the skin with the use of the abrasion principle. The machine’s performance was evaluated at different roller speeds and pre-treatment conditions. According to the findings of the experiment, the peeling machine recovered $39.40 \%$ of the peeled cloves at 400 rpm when hot air-treated cloves were used, whereas the untreated control samples recovered $33.45 \%$. The machine’s operational capacity was found to be $15 \mathrm{~kg} / \mathrm{h}$, and when hot air pre-treated at 400 rpm, the maximum peeling efficiency was recorded at $48.13 \%$. According to an economic study, the equipment designed for garlic peeling is a cost-effective option for small-scale companies, offering lower labor costs and increased productivity.
