SmartMed: A QR Code-based Drug Dispensing System

Conventional pharmacy processes are often prone to errors and delays, presenting significant challenges to healthcare efficiency. This article proposes an innovative QR-based medication dispensing system that leverages Internet of Things (IoT) technology to automate the prescription and delivery of pharmaceuticals. A dedicated website generates a QR code along with textual information based on the prescribed medications. Patients can utilise these QR codes at a dispensing station, where a webcam scans the code and transmits the data to a Raspberry Pi Zero $2 W$ for processing. The system accurately extracts relevant information, verifies stock levels, and controls stepper motors to dispense the correct dosage with prescribed tablets. Testing conducted under both single- and multi-drug conditions demonstrated a high degree of accuracy, reduced need for human intervention, and expedited service. The proposed solution enhances healthcare accessibility and operational efficiency, providing a scalable, modern approach to pharmacy management.
