Integration of Security Patterns for Quality Analysis in Production Systems Engineering

The increasing digitization of industrial manufacturing systems expands the attack surface for adversaries and exposes product quality to cybersecurity risks that are not adequately addressed in traditional Production System Engineering (PSE). While existing security standards offer structured methods, they remain disconnected from the domain-specific engineering workflows that shape manufacturing. This paper introduces the Production Quality Security Network (PQSN), a model-based methodology that leverages the parallels between quality engineering and threat analysis. By establishing resuable patterns PQSN enables modular, standards-aligned, and queryable integration of security into PSE. An industrial case study on an ultrasonic welding system shows that PQSN correctly identifies quality-critical resources at risk, recommends security measures, and supports the prioritization of the mitigations based on their quality impact. The methodology was positively received by stakeholders for its ability to shift the security focus toward the product value stream and reduce redundant analysis efforts. These findings demonstrate that PQSN fosters interdisciplinary collaboration, providing a foundation for security-by-design in PSE.
