AML-ID – concept and implementation of semantic matching with AutomationML

The foundation of any digital data exchange in engineering is a common understanding of the vocabulary used. Ideally, a single, global, and harmonized semantic standard would define all necessary terminology. However, a variety of well-established and valuable semantic standards — such as ECLASS, IEC CDD, SI units, and numerous proprietary dictionaries — have evolved over time. Different engineering tools, user communities, and organizations typically support only a subset of these standards, which significantly hampers seamless data exchange. This contribution introduces a concept based on AutomationML that enables the vendor-agnostic modelling of mappings between existing semantic standards for interconnecting vocabularies across a heterogeneous semantic landscape and for publishing these mappings for global reuse. The implementation is publicly available to all interested parties.
