Artificial intelligence in business process modelling: A structured overview of trends, challenges and future research direction

This paper presents a structured literature review that explores the relationship between artificial intelligence and business process modeling. The study focuses on how artificial intelligence technologies such as machine learning, natural language processing, robotic process automation and generative artificial intelligence are applied within business process modeling between 2022 and 2025. The research follows the PRISMA methodology and uses four major scientific databases: Scopus, Web of Science, IEEE Xplore and SpringerLink. After systematic filtering and evaluation, forty-two peer-reviewed articles were selected for in-depth analysis. The results highlight emerging research trends including the growing use of natural language processing and large language models, as well as methodological gaps in the implementation of artificial intelligence within business process modeling. The paper concludes by summarizing key challenges and identifying directions for future research.
