Smartphone-Driven IoT Framework for Time Synchronized Structural Health Monitoring

Vibration is a crucial factor that determines the usability and structural integrity of buildings. Research on structural response monitoring techniques is continuing in various ways. The field of measurement systems is evolving in an efficient direction by addressing the limitations of conventional technologies through the progression of wired data acquisition systems, wireless sensor networks, and mobile sensing. This study developed the first mobile synchronous sensing system(MSSS) that utilizes continuously advancing smartphone technology and sensors, offering cost-effectiveness by eliminating the need for equipment purchases, ensuring stability in data transmission and reception, and enabling easy measurements. This system enables the remote measurement of acceleration at distributed locations using only smartphones. M-sync algorithm was implemented as a core function of the system to synchronize the different times of each device, and its accuracy in vibration assessment was confirmed through comparison and review with conventional commercial equipment.
