Utilization of Ultrasonic Testing for the Evaluation of Multilayered SPF/DB Components in the Aerospace Industry

Superplastic forming/diffusion bonding (SPF/DB) components are extensively utilized in the aerospace industry. This study adopted immersion UT and phased-array ultrasonic testing to assess three-layer and seven-layer thin-walled SPF/DB components. For three-layer components, 15 MHz five-axis immersion UT achieved effective detection with brane line rectification required to mitigate model-part deviations; scanning acoustic microscopy and the total focusing method (TFM) facilitated rib width measurement, and TFM demonstrated higher reliability at surface-interface angles ranging from 0.5° to 4°. For seven-layer components (featuring 2.5D curved contours and 0.5 mm-thin outer skins), 50MHz center-frequency scanning acoustic microscopy technique outperforms 25MHz.
