Revolutionize Bulk Acoustic Wave Gyroscopes through the Exploitation of Topological Interface States

Bulk acoustic wave (BAW) gyroscopes have historically suffered from low scale factors due to the high effective bulk modulus of piezoelectric films, resulting in limited displacement and velocity, and consequently, reduced Coriolis forces. In this work, we present a novel BAW device that exploits a topological interface state and achieves unprecedented particle velocities far exceeding those attainable by conventional BAW structures. The reported device demonstrates a measured maximum out-of-plane velocity of 23 m/s. These findings eliminate one of the primary limitations of BAW gyroscopes and have the potential to facilitate the development of highly sensitive, next-generation BAW gyroscopes.
