NextLearn: An AI-Powered Adaptive Learning and Recommendation System for Online Courses

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) provide flexible access to education but often suffer from low learner engagement and poor course completion rates due to static content and one-size-fits-all delivery. This paper introduces NextLearn, a web-based MOOC platform that employs artificial intelligence to provide an adaptive, personalized, and engaging learning experience. The platform features QuizBot, an AI-driven quiz generator using BERT-based Question Generation, a Personalized Recommendation Engine that suggests tailored content based on learner performance, and an English Proficiency Module (EPM) for rural and multilingual learners. NextLearn employs a Progressive Content Unlocking mechanism and gamified tools like Study Streaks and Daily Goal Tracking to promote consistent engagement. The system leverages natural language processing, user behavior analysis, and AI-assisted recommendation models to adapt to each learner’s cognitive trajectory, ensuring enhanced retention, motivation, and learning outcomes.
