Image Identification and Translation System for Visually Impaired Individuals

The following research presents a model aimed at aiding the visually impaired by translating image data into both text and speech forms and interpreting it to a language of the user’s choice. Image processing is used by the system to find objects that are present in the image captured by the user. The objects that are identified are then translated into the user’s preferred language and presented in textual and spoken form. The mentioned system composes of several processes such as image processing, object recognition through the use of Faster R-CNN, language translation, and speech synthesis in providing a simple and interactive GUI. Image segmentation and extracting features of the objects are important in determining objects. The database for this system comprises of many sample images that help in analysing the solidity of the object recognition. Such an approach provides a certain level of assurance that the application enhances accessibility for visually-impaired persons.
