Functional Connectivity and Long-Range Temporal Correlations of Neural Activity in the Alpha-Range as Markers of Intellectual Development in Children

This study investigates alpha-band long-range temporal correlations, measured by detrended fluctuation analysis, and functional connectivity, assessed via phase locking value, as neurophysiological markers of intellectual development in children aged 8-14 years. Resting-state EEG recordings and cognitive testing revealed significant associations between DFA exponents in frontal-parietal regions and cognitive performance. Connectome-based predictive modeling identified alpha-range networks predictive of intellectual abilities. Our findings suggest that alpha-rhythm dynamics serve as sensitive biomarkers of cognitive development in children.
