Integrated Optimization Technique for Renewable Energy Distributed Generation and Battery Energy Storage in Loss and Voltage Stability Control

The integration of distributed generation (DG) in distribution systems has gained significant attention due to its potential to enhance overall power system performance. However, improper placement or sizing of DG units can lead to under-compensation or over-compensation, adversely affecting system efficiency and stability. To address this issue, this paper proposes a novel Hybrid Cuckoo Search–Evolutionary Programming (HCSEP) technique for optimizing the installation of renewable energy-based distributed generation and battery energy storage systems. The proposed method aims to minimize power losses and enhance voltage stability by determining the optimal location and size of DG and storage units. The effectiveness of the HCSEP technique is demonstrated on the IEEE 33-bus Radial Distribution System, showcasing its capability in achieving improved operational performance and system reliability. Three cases involving (i) single solar and battery energy storage, and (iii) two solar systems are considered in this study. The proposed HCSEP managed to achieve 69.78% loss reduction at the lowest loading condition in the first case, 80.67% in the second case, 83.18% in the third case, and 84.7% in the fourth case. This implies that HCSEP is superior to the benchmarked technique.
