Investigating Narrative-Driven Game-Based Learning for SQL Education

This paper introduces Cybernetic Sabotage, a game-based learning platform that uses immersive gameplay to enhance students' SQL proficiency. The system employs a cyberpunk narrative to contextualize interactive SQL challenges to sustain motivation and support deeper comprehension. A prototype testing with 72 students illustrates how integrating game-based learning and narrative elements can positively influence and enhance learning experiences in SQL practice. The findings advance current research on teaching methods for technical domains and lay the foundation for more extensive studies of game-based learning and storytelling strategies in SQL education. Correlational analysis revealed that intrinsic motivation and narrative engagement were more predictive of learning performance than time-on-task or hint usage. These insights highlight the value of narrative framing in designing scalable, learner-centred technical education tools.
