Measuring the Effectiveness of Adaptive Virtual Reality Training on Learning Transfer

Adaptive Virtual Reality Training (VRT) enables personalised training of simulated tasks in 3D interactive virtual environments. The transfer of knowledge from a training context into a real-world setting, also called learning transfer, is an essential part of the learning process. This paper examines the effectiveness of adaptive VRT on learning transfer. We conduct a between subject user study with three groups (control group (n=26), non-adaptive VRT group (n=26), adaptive VRT group (n=28)). The effectiveness on learning transfer is measured with three objective (round time, memorisation of tasks, number of errors) and two subjective metrics (mental workload, physical effort). We slightly modify an existing adaptive VRT building on physiological measurement data (PMD) and create a cor-responding real-world implementation. Results show significant differences among the three groups for round time, number of errors, memorisation of tasks and perceived physical effort.
