College Students’ Information Literacy Levels and Their Usage of ChatGPT in Support of Learning

This study aimed to explore college students’ information literacy levels and usage of ChatGPT as a tool for learning, as well as to determine whether a significant correlation exists between these two variables. A cross-sectional quantitative design was employed, surveying 979 college students from a private university in Laguna, Philippines. The results indicated that college students demonstrated a high level of information literacy skills. Notably, students from the School of Computer Studies and those from higher socio-economic classes exhibited higher levels of information literacy, likely due to greater exposure to digital tools and resources. Results also showed that college students sometimes utilize this ChatGPT tool to support their learning. The existence of other AI tools could explain students’ moderate usage of ChatGPT. Spearman’s correlation analysis revealed a statistically significant but weak positive correlation between students’ information literacy levels and the extent to which they used ChatGPT to support their learning. These findings suggest that strengthening students’ information literacy and ensuring equitable access to digital tools can help ensure that AI tools like ChatGPT are used effectively and ethically, ultimately enhancing students’ learning experience
