Hybrid Robust Phase Current Balancing Control for Interleaved DC–DC Boost Converters

Interleaved dc–dc converters provide an effective approach for improving power density, increasing power handling capability, and reducing current ripple and thermal stress in high-power applications. These converters consist of multiple phases depending on the power rating and ripple constraints. However, component mismatches, such as variations in phase inductances and circuit tolerances, can lead to unequal current sharing among phases. This imbalance increases thermal stress, reduces efficiency, and introduces circulating currents that degrade system reliability. In this article, a hybrid robust phase current balancing (HRPCB) control is proposed to achieve equal current sharing among all phases of the interleaved boost converter. The proposed control consists of a combination of integral sliding mode (ISM) and proportional integral (PI) control. The proposed HRPCB control mitigates the matched uncertainties without amplification of any unmatched uncertainty during operation. The PI controller operates as a nominal controller that maintains the output dc link voltage, and the ISM generates a nonlinear control law that regulates the current sharing among the different phases. Simulation and experimental results validate the effectiveness of the proposed HRPCB strategy in achieving robust phase current balancing and improving overall converter performance.
