Investigating the Use of Computational tools for HCM Method in Lebanese Urban Intersection Design

Congested intersections represent a serious problem in urban areas, causing restrictions to traffic, endangering pedestrians, and undermining sustainable development policies. The objective of this research is to use computational tools to compare simulation with a real case scenario in a developing country where traffic laws and regulations are not enforced. The work is structured into two parts: data collection and design. Traffic data will be collected for a week at each approach using equipment from Metrocount. The goal of this research is to improve the urban mobility in Lebanese cities and to achieve that, the case of the city of Jounieh, Lebanon was used to validate the simulation model. The goal of this research is to improve the urban mobility in Lebanese cities, During the simulation and design phase, an assessment was made of the current design of the intersection versus an improved signalized intersection design. Based on the data analysis and simulation results, roundabouts were found to be the most appropriate solution to reduce delay and improve flow, although it requires spatial modifications, whereas signalized intersections are a good middle ground for reducing delay, when compared to unsignalized & roundabout intersections, but was the most effective model when it came to reducing emissions.
