Design and Development of InP-Based Integrated Multi-Channel Transmitters for WDM-PON

This work presents the design and experimental results of three generations of photonic integrated circuits (PICs) for application in Wavelength Division Multiplexing Passive Optical Network (WDM-PON) systems. Developed using generic InP platforms, the circuits integrate key components such as distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) lasers, modulators, photodiodes, and cyclic arrayed waveguide grating (AWGs), enabling scalable, multi-channel optical transceivers. Three generations of InP-based PICs for WDM-PON applications were designed, fabricated, and experimentally validated. Experimental results confirm high performance and reliability, highlighting the potential for cost-effective deployment in next-generation fiber-optic access networks. Furthermore, the presented application-specific PICs are versatile and can be employed not only in WDM systems but also in more advanced multiplexing schemes such as space-division multiplexing (SDM) and in free-space optical communication (FSOC) links, paving the way for future high-capacity and flexible optical networks.
