It is possible to show that 90% of daily range needs of passenger electric vehicles (EVs) can be supported with the most basic 120 V ac infrastructure. This type of infrastructure offers a promising pathway toward ubiquitous energy access for EV charging. The article provides comprehensive analysis of the possibilities, showing that U.S. passenger car driving maps to an average daily need of about 6.15 kWh. It also brings out cases for school buses and delivery vans that are parked at depots many hours per day. It is shown that modest charge coordination supports about 150 charge access points instead of just one fast charger for a typical 400 A electrical service panel. The approach has advantages of inexpensive hardware, modest grid impact, charging flexibility, low battery wear and tear, and costs aligned to retail electricity.
