Design of a Dual-CP Phased Array with ±70° Scanning Range and Stable Gain Performance

This paper presents the design and analysis of a dual circularly polarized (CP) dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) phased array operating at 19.7 - 22.7 GHz. The proposed antenna features a wide beam-scanning range and minimal gain fluctuation. The DRA employs dual L-shaped probes to excite a circular microstrip patch, achieving dual-polarization effects and a high impedance bandwidth. The antenna exhibits a saddle-shaped radiation pattern in both E- and H-planes, with a half-power beamwidth (HPBW) of 140°, a peak gain of 4.58 dBi, and an axial ratio (AR) below 2 dB across the operating band. A 1×7 linear array based on this DRA is simulated to evaluate beam-scanning performance. Results demonstrate a scanning range of ± 70°(for both LHCP and RHCP modes) with gain fluctuations below 0.2 dBi. This design offers a robust solution for dual-CP phased array systems requiring wide-angle scanning and stable gain.
