Development of a Mini Air-Breathing Electroaerodynamic Ion Propulsion System Prototype with a Solar-Chargeable Power System

This paper presents the development and experimental analysis of a low-power air-breathing electroaerodynamic (EAD) ion propulsion system, designed to generate continuous thrust using corona discharge-based ion acceleration. Unlike conventional ion propulsion systems that rely on stored propellants, this system utilizes ambient air as a working medium, eliminating the need for onboard fuel. A key potential application of this technology is providing sustained low-thrust propulsion for Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites, enabling prolonged mission durations without fuel constraints. Additionally, its silent and efficient operation makes it suitable for high-altitude aerial platforms and atmospheric research applications. This study focuses on optimizing ionization efficiency, thrust-to-power ratio, and electrode configurations to enhance overall performance. The results contribute to the feasibility of EAD-based propulsion as an alternative, low-noise, and energy-efficient thrust technology, expanding possibilities for both terrestrial and space applications.
