Slice-Based Resource Allocation for Intermediate UPF

One of the key challenges for low-latency services is ensuring end-to-end low latency and reliable communication. Ultra-low latency service requires the network connections to be established in a way that enables near-instantaneous data transmission with an extremely low level of latency. Remote surgery and autonomous vehicles are examples of applications that require such ultra-low latency and real-time communication. Our research focuses on utilizing 5 G technology to enable remote surgery across health care institutions. We achieve this by constantly providing low latency communication that connects physicians to patients in a more agile and flexible way. The solution is innovatively placing a “local” and “cloud-native” User Plane Function (UPF) at the most suitable edge distributed locations between the source (where the physician is located) and the destination (where the patient and a robotic arm are located) to ensure minimal latency. Optimally placing the UPF to achieve minimum latency dramatically enhances the end-user's quality of experience (QoE). This deployment model optimizes response time and reduces travel expenses and carbon footprint.
